Join The Ripple Make A Wave: Start with League 101

You’ve paid dues to join the League of Women Voters of Wake County, but do you know what you’re getting for your money? We hear the idea of “transparency” tossed around a lot these days–valuing openness, access, understanding, inclusion. The League believes our members deserve this. Whatever a member’s intent–from simply demonstrating support, to becoming an active volunteer–we want to offer you some insight into the workings of our organization, and your opportunities to engage with activities and other members.

When our local membership was small and growing slowly, meeting and orienting new members could be done one-on-one. But the rapid swell in membership in 2016 made us realize we needed to formalize an orientation that could serve larger numbers. Ta da! The birth of League 101.

League 101... the name should quickly indicate that this is an introduction (but nowhere near the length of those semester-long freshman 101 courses). We spend just two hours on a basic overview of the League of Women Voters and how to get the most from your membership. You’ll get some history of our origins (both national and local). You’ll learn about the League’s mission. We’ll clarify the League of Women Voters’ integral principle of nonpartisanship. An overview of our activities and organizational structure can help you see where you might like to fit in and find meaning. We’ll also give some background on how the League reaches positions on issues and provide an understanding of the League’s advocacy. That’s the core content of League 101.

BUT, beyond sharing knowledge about the League, the greater value of League 101 is the interactions and engagement of members with each other. We keep these sessions small (members only), a maximum of twelve people getting acquainted around a table, with the chance to bring in a bit of their personal experiences and perspectives. Feedback has been extremely positive, providing helpful suggestions that we’ve used to adapt our sessions. Over and over, we hear that people left League 101 feeling energized and enthused about belonging to the League. Some say they feel they’ve “found their people.”

Maybe you joined the League to “find your people.” Maybe you’ve been a long-time member but have never learned some of the League basics. Whether an old member or new, inactive or highly engaged, you are most welcome to attend a future League 101 session.

Our next League 101 sessions are upcoming, at the LWV-Wake Office, 3509 Haworth Drive #306, in Raleigh.

Wednesday, March 13, 2024 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Tuesday April 30th, 2024 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Membership and registration are required, head to our calendar to sign up.

We look forward to guiding you through an interactive session in excellent company.
