Our featured speaker is Jaclyn Maffetore of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice. Ms. Maffetore is a staff attorney in SCSJ’s voting rights section, where she engages in litigation and policy advocacy promoting fair districts and voter enfranchisement for marginalized communities. Growing up in Southeastern North Carolina and witnessing discrimination first hand, Jaclyn developed a strong sense of justice and fairness that guided her toward the legal profession. Jaclyn received her B.A. in Political Science from Wake Forest University and received her J.D. with honors from Elon University School of Law. During her time at Wake Forest, she focused her studies on the politics of identity and intersectionality, which highlighted the disparate treatment minority groups have faced in our political systems.

The Southern Coalition for Social Justice was founded  by a multidisciplinary group who believe that families and communities engaged in social justice struggles need a team of lawyers, social scientists, community organizers and media specialists to support them in their efforts to dismantle structural racism and oppression.

Some of SCSJ's current efforts include these interrelated issues: Protecting minority voting rights and strengthening meaningful opportunities for effective civic participation for all; Advancing environmental justice and advocacy supporting community-driven efforts; Challenging racial discrimination at all stages of the criminal justice system and its impact on racial and ethnic minority communities.

Nonmembers are welcome and encouraged to attend!
