Canvass 3 Image

Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV-Wake.

Phew! Election season is over.......almost. There is an important last step, "Canvass", which is the process of determining that the votes have been counted and tabulated correctly, culminating in the authentication of the official election results. (NC 163- 182.5)

There is also a Pre-Canvass meeting on Thursday, November 17th. During Pre-Canvass, the county election board will process mail-in absentee and provisional ballots. These are important meetings to observe as the League wants to make sure that all eligible ballots are counted.

According to the NC State Board of Elections (NCSBE) procedures, a county board of elections (CBOE) Canvass covers the following:
  • Sample Audit – test to ensure voting equipment read the voter’s choices accurately.
  • Absentee Ballot Review/Count – pertaining to ballots received after and not processed before Election Day.
  • Provisional Ballot Review/Count – ballots will have a preliminary review and are researched by CBOE staff to determine eligibility for counting.
  • Election Day Reconciliation
  • Challenges/Protests
  • Close Contest Audit – also known as recounts.

We hope members will observe both Wake County Board of Election's Pre-Canvass, Thursday, November 17th at 10am and Canvass, Friday, November 18th at 11am held at Wake County Board of Elections, 1200 N. New Hope Road in Raleigh. For more information about Canvass and how to observe and report, please check out the resources on the LWVNC website here.

Giving Tuesday is coming November 29th!

Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving, is returning November 29th. Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. LWV-Wake has participated in Giving Tuesday since 2019, and in 2021, we raised over $4000 to help LWV-Wake carry out our mission of Educating Voters and Defending Democracy.

This year, we are reaching out to membership and beyond to ask again for your support as we work to fulfill our strategic priority of increasing the diversity of the League. To ensure our League continues to grow and creates a pipeline of younger volunteers, we are creating a Youth Engagement Program.

We've spent the past year, researching other Leagues' Youth Engagement programs and sought feedback from youth activists at ECU to determine what would motivate high-school and college students to join LWV-Wake. However, we need funds to help develop these outreach programs.

Over the next few weeks, we will embark on a social media campaign to reach donors and describe the program and the successful impact LWV-Wake has had in our community.

Please be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter, and of course, read more about our impact in the next newsletter! To be recognized as one of our early donors and to show your support for our program and the League, please click on the link below to donate:

Timely Topics
Understanding the Real Root of America's Divide
November 16th 12 noon

Americans come from different backgrounds and experiences (neo-diversity) and at some point, will encounter and interact with people who are not "like them". Anxiety and fear builds, creating tension.  If we wish to effectively manage this tension and prevent further division,  people with political voices must speak the truth without magnifying the anxiety and fear. Young Americans, in particular, want to hear voices that address these situations because "...a house divided against itself cannot stand."

Please join our November Timely Topics: Helping Citizens Understand the Real Root of Today's American Divide with Dr. Rupert W. Nacoste.  Dr. Nacoste, Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor of Psychology at North Carolina State University and author of Taking On Diversity: How We Can Move From Anxiety to Respect, will discuss the societal changes that have led to polarization (the divide) and the dangers of simply opting-out of the political process. Garden Center Meetup Image
  • November 17th 2-3pm - League Lit - Pelosi by Mollie Ball - From the Library Journal Review, "Ball has written a thorough and enjoyable political biography moving from Pelosi's childhood as the daughter of the mayor of Baltimore to her evolving political sense stemming from her time as a party fundraiser and whip. Ball describes how Pelosi learned to only bring legislation to a vote when she knows it will pass, and how many votes it will receive". To register, click here.
  • November 30th 2-4pm - LWV-Wake Member Meetup - Join our informal gathering of LWV-Wake members on Wednesday, November 30th at Atlantic Gardening Center, 5217 Atlantic Blvd., Raleigh between 2 and 4 p.m. Lots of free parking. RSVPs are not needed. Just come and be a part of this opportunity to meet and make friends! Questions?  Email Dale Cousins.
