LWV-Wake Update 10/3/2022

DONATE

Hispanic Heritage Month

Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV-Wake.

We are in STILL in full League mode as we approach Election Day 2022! Our Voter Services committee members are busy registering voters, tabling at Clouds Brewing and other events, and working to promote VOTE411.

Speaking of Clouds, because of a the uncertainty surrounding hurricane Ian, a decision was made to reschedule our "Wheat the People" special brew kick-off. It will now be held this Saturday, October 8th 11:30am-2pm. We hope Leaguers will come out, have brunch and support LWV-Wake! More info can be found below.

Candidate forums have concluded. However, we need your help in promoting the recordings so voters in Raleigh and Wake County can make informed decisions on Election Day. Please share the links (found below) on your personal social media pages and share them with any organizations with which you are involved.

Also, please take a moment to review upcoming events. We have scheduled two new Timely Topics and a field trip to the NCSU Belltower. Our League Leaders work hard to engage community leaders to invite them speak to us. Please show your support for our League and the community by attending these events. We need more participation! All Timely Topics are open to the public. Please share. 😃

Hispanic Heritage Month
“Every moment is an organizing opportunity, every person a potential activist, every minute a chance to change the world.” - Delores Huerta

Hispanic Heritage month runs from September 15th - October 15th. We continue to celebrate the achievements of Hispanic Americans who have made a positive impact in music, food, art, cinema, literature, and of course, politics and social justice.

Dolores Huerta, a school teacher, is perhaps one of the most influential Hispanic Americans, who worked to fight against economic injustice. After noticing many of her students in class showed up malnourished, Dolores (along with Cesar Chavez) founded the first union for farmers in the United States, called the United Farm Workers, in the 1960's. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

From the League
Voter Services
Voter Services committee volunteers continue to register new citizens to vote at weekly U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) ceremonies as well as GOTV weekend tabling/voter registration activities at Clouds Brewing.

Weekend tabling will continue through Election Day and we still need volunteers. If you can lend an hour or two to greet patrons at Clouds and let them know about early voting, VOTE411 and, of course, invite them to purchase a "Wheat The People" brew and support LWV-Wake! Sign-up link is below under Events.

Wake BOE Observers
Members are encouraged to observe Wake County Board of Elections meetings every Tuesday at 10am beginning October 4th. During these meetings, board and staff will begin to process absentee ballots and provisional ballots. Please document any relevant comments about the process, including discussions involving guidance board members/staff are receiving from the NCBOE. Please submit your observations/comments on the County Board of Elections Monitoring Report Form found here.
A full schedule of the Wake County Board of Elections meetings can be found here.

VOTE411
New VOTE411 Yard Signs are now available and will be distributed at early voting sites in Wake County. We still need a volunteer to place signs at the Wendell Community Center.  If you can assist, please email Sandy Hutchinson. Thank you to all the Voter Services Committee volunteers who jumped in to assist in placing these signs at all early voting locations!

Environment Committee
The Environment Committee, along with Wake County,  would like your help in reducing food waste in landfills. This summer, members participated in Sustainable America’s “I Value Food: Too Good to Waste Challenge.”  The exercise made participants more aware of the ways food is wasted in our own homes and showed us how to reduce waste in the future.

If you want to reduce food waste in your home, save money, and make a positive impact on the environment, we encourage you to take the challenge as well. The challenge takes 4 consecutive weeks to complete, and involves collecting and composting food that could have been eaten but that you have to throw out, such as leftovers that have gone bad, food that is well past its expiration date, and anything that rotted before you had a chance to eat it. Participants record the amount of food each week. To learn more, and to sign up, click here.

Once you’ve signed up for the challenge, you’ll receive weekly emails with tips for meal planning, food storage, using leftovers, and more. In addition, you’ll see how much you were able to reduce food waste over the four-week period, and learn how to continue the practice. Invite your family and friends to sign up too! It’s good for the environment and for your pocketbook.

If you want to do even more, we invite you to join the Environment Committee. We research and advocate for solutions to climate change, plastic pollution, litter, and many more local environmental issues.

World Premiere
A Great Big Woolly Mammoth Thawing From The Ice
Sept. 29th - Oct. 16th

Opening Burning Coal Theatre Company’s 2022-2023 season, A Great Big Wooly Mammoth Thawing From The Ice is a world premiere by London-based playwright Tatty Hennessy. Hennessy uses a New York Times article about melting permafrost and the real-life recent discovery of preserved mammoths as inspiration to explore the unexpected sides of climate change and its impacts on personal relationships.

In Alaska an activist named Leah (AC Donahue), a tech giant named Justin (Matthew Hagar), and an oil driller named Jim (Gene Cordon) walk into a bar. They meet up with Jim’s son Justin (Ben Apple), a wilderness guide, for an unusual journey through the Yukon. The isolation of the wilderness has a way of making the truth come out. The temperature is rising, and who knows what buried treasures they might find in the glacial wreckage.

For more details about the play, playwright and director, read Burning Coal's press release here.

What happens after you vote?
LWVNC Releases Video "What Happens After You Vote in NC"

Most North Carolinians are familiar with what voting looks like – they know about the various voting opportunities that are presented before and on Election Day; they have seen a sample ballot, and they have likely interacted with a poll worker.

But to have full confidence in our elections, it’s crucial to understand:

-  the safeguards in place to prevent double voting
-  the tools that the N.C. State Board of Elections utilizes, such as BallotTrax, so that voters can track their ballot
-  the ways in which ballots cast before Election Day are processed prior to the closing of the polls on Election Day
-  the opportunities for North Carolinians to take part in the transparent process of tabulating votes
-  the intricacies of the post-election canvass process, when the election results are checked and finalized.

Knowing that the best protection for any election system is the vigilance and participation of voters, the League wanted to cover these topics in a video, with the hopes that the factual and helpful information contained within would be shared far and wide.

We encourage you to share this video, which is also on our website homepage, with friends and other organizations of which you are a part.
