Join LWVODC as they celebrate their 75th Anniversary!

The public is invited to help celebrate LWVODC's (Orange, Durham and Chatham Counties) long history of accomplishments of "Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy" on September 15th in Chapel Hill. Guest speaker, LWVUS President Deborah Ann Turner, MD, JD will celebrate the League and discuss the current state of our democracy and the work that lies ahead for all of us.

Dr. Turner is currently serving as the 20th president of the League of Women Voters of the United States (LWVUS). She's had an extraordinary career, both in medicine and through her public service in The Outreach Program, where she participated in twelve medical missions to Tanzania.

Her work with League began when Dr. Turner joined the Des Moines Metropolitan League in 2010. She became president in 2011, when the League was at risk of disbanding. She served in that role until 2015, helping revitalize membership and focus the board leadership.

Turner was elected to the League’s national board of directors in 2016 where she served on the Finance committee, Governance Committee, and chaired the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. As chair of the DEI Committee, Deborah and her colleagues focused on organizational culture changes to the League’s mission work, emphasizing not only racial equity but also intergenerational dynamics, socioeconomic differences, gender identity, and interpersonal engagement. The celebration event will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History on the UNC Campus located at 150 South Road in Chapel Hill. While the event is free, registration is required.

It is not often we have the opportunity to spend time with the LWVUS president in our own back yard. I hope you will take the opportunity to attend and show Dr. Turner how we Empower Voters and Defend Democracy here in North Carolina! Registration ends September 7th.

Should you have any questions about this event, please email LWVODC President, Jennifer Rubin.

Thank you for your support!
