LWV-Wake Update 7/26/2022

DONATE

Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV-Wake.

Today is election day in Wake County for the Cary Town Council runoff and the second primary election (Democratic nomination) for sheriff. Out of 625,000 Wake County voters eligible to vote in this election, only 10,241 have voted early as of Monday afternoon. For an interesting article about implications of run-off and multiple elections with low voter turnout, click here.

While voter turnout in run-off elections is usually low, esp. given the confusion that exists around these elections, LWV-Wake's mission of Empowering Voters is crucial in helping voters navigate election and voting information in Wake County.

Our VOTE411 platform is used extensively by voters as a trusted source for voting information. As we work to gain new visitors to this website each year, we recognize the need to step up promotional efforts.

To assist us in these efforts, please support LWV-Wake during our upcoming Women's Equality Day. This is our largest fundraiser of the year and we rely on these funds to assist us with VOTE411 promotion, GOTV projects, as well as new and exciting youth and civic education programs, which you will hear more about in the upcoming months.

To date, we have already have received RSVP's from more than 34 elected officials! Attending Women's Equality Day is a great opportunity to meet elected officials and learn more about important issues that affect our communities.

In addition, Janet Cowell, former NC state treasurer, state senator and current CEO of Dix Park Conservancy, will serve as our keynote speaker. Ms. Cowell will discuss her career as it relates to issues of equality, and provide an overview of upcoming projects at Dix Park.

NC Board of Elections Update
On July 14th, NCSBOE, in a 3-2 vote, declined the Republican "signature match" motion. There were over 8,000 public comments submitted and the League was effective in engaging the public with our Call to Action for public comments.

On Friday, July 22nd, NCSBOE opened public comment on two proposed temporary rules for the upcoming November election. One relates to tasks and duties of precinct officials and the the second clarifies the appointment process and rules for precinct-specific observers, one-stop observers, and at-large observers. Public comments will be accepted through August 8th. There will be a virtual public hearing at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2022.

Voter Services
As we approach mid-term elections, our Voter Services committee is determining projects aimed at educating voters and encouraging everyone to VOTE. Project ideas include combating mis- and disinformation about elections and voting, instilling confidence in our elections, and protecting our votes.

If you are interested in working on upcoming election/voting projects, please email Marian Lewin.

Raleigh's Litter Problem by Jeri Gray
In a recent blog post, LWV-Wake member and environmental activist, Jeri Gray, describes and unintended and undesirable consequence of our fast-growing city: trash. Jeri also outlines steps that elected officials can take to keep Raleigh beautiful and prevent trash from entering our streams and rivers. Read Jeri's blog post here.

Strategic Report Image
LWV-Wake Strategic Plan Report Now Available
After six months of brainstorming discussions, rounds of decision-making and walls filled with paper and sticky notes, the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan Report has been completed. This report is an update to our 2017-2022 plan and is available here:

Our strategic planning process was facilitated by our immediate past president and LWVUS board member, Dianna Wynn. Dianna provided her consultant services and created this report as an in-kind donation. Dianna is a communications consultant, former college professor and author.

The LWV-Wake Board of Directors is responsible for implementing the plan, with the assistance of our members. All of our work is mission-driven and will serve to meet the goals and objectives outlined in this plan. We are extremely grateful for Dianna's contribution!

Membership Renewals - Thank you for renewing your membership!

Members with a June/July renewal date have received three renewal email notices generated by the membership roster on our website. Many members have completed their renewal online or by printing an invoice and mailing it to the League office. We sincerely appreciate all who have renewed their League membership! For those who have not yet renewed, you will be prompted to renew when you login to our website.
A Reminder: You can extend your membership for another full year by paying dues in one of three ways: on the website, using your credit card through our  PayPal credit card processing system (no PayPal account required), via a PayPal account, or by downloading the form and mailing a check ($60 individual; $90 household). Our office address is 3509 Haworth Drive Suite 306  Raleigh, NC 27609. Office mail is checked once or twice a week. Once your check is received, your membership will be noted as paid on our website directory.
In addition to our regular individual/household membership, we now offer a benefactor/benefactor household level membership for $100/$150.  This type of membership is being offered to raise funds for memberships for those that may want to join the League but lack adequate financial resources to do so. Once we have collected enough benefactor memberships, we will begin to offer a "Pay What You Can" membership. We encourage any member who is interested in helping others join the League to choose this membership level.

If you have forgotten your password in order to log in to your account, you may follow the instructions to create a new one, or you may contact roster guru Laurel Voelker to assist you. Should you have any questions about memberships, please contact Dale Cousins.

We hope all of you will continue your membership and support the League of Women Voters of Wake County.
