LWV-Wake Announces Fair Maps Art Contest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

League of Women Voters of Wake County Announces Art Contest to Promote Fair Maps

RALEIGH, NC, July 6, 2021

The League of Women Voters of Wake County (LWV-Wake) is sponsoring a Fair Maps Art Contest for both adults and teens to raise awareness of redistricting issues in North Carolina. Winners will receive cash prizes.

The contest opens on July 5; entries can be submitted through August 15, 2021. The contest is open to teen and adult residents of North Carolina. An online exhibition of the contest entries will open in mid-August.

Original works should be inspired by the League’s belief that voting districts—which the legislature will draw this year—should be fair. Those who draw the maps should avoid partisan politics in the process; that process should provide an abundance of transparency and ample opportunities for public input. The contest fits with LWV-Wake’s mission to educate voters and advocate for a healthy democracy by encouraging informed and active participation in government.

LWV-Wake’s Redistricting Reform Committee Co-chair, Laurel Voelker, said, “Art is a powerful way to communicate, and we are excited to engage artists and art lovers in the fight for fair voting districts in North Carolina.”

Find contest details, rules, and entry forms at www.lwvwake.org/ArtContest. Winners will be chosen through a combination of public voting and a decision by the LWV-Wake Board of Directors. Winners will be announced in early September.

The League of Women Voters of Wake County is a grassroots nonpartisan organization dedicated to encouraging citizens’ participation in government. The League of Women Voters does not endorse or oppose political parties or candidates for office. Learn more at www.lwvwake.org.
